Microsoft supports Linux via Novell; Satan phones Gates regarding …

  • Microsoft supports Linux via Novell; Satan phones Gates regarding temperature Posted Nov 2nd 2006 6:57PM by Filed under:, It’s not exactly official just yet, but the latest word from ‘people familiar with the companies’ being printed up by The Wall Street Journal is sensational enough to run even if we overheard a couple of bums whispering about it on the street
  • Quite an interesting development, given Microsoft’s heretofore complete disgust for anything Linux related, and made even more miraculous in light of the specifically bad blood between these two companies — remember that $536 million antitrust settlement a couple years back? Either Microsoft is starting to feel the Linux heat, or they decided ’stop asserting their patent rights’ to get themselves out of any more antitrust trouble
  • The games are really getting started! Neutral keith waddington @ we play with linux so you can put us on your systems too
  • What would really make MS king of all is if they start developing software for linux, kind of like they do for the Mac
  • No offense to OOo, but they’d be pretty close to screwed if Office came out for linux
  • Highly Ranked Whynot @ Can somebody help me? I think I kinda stepped into a parallel universe by mistake, I just read something about Microsoft acknowledging the existence of Linux or something like that..

Microsoft Linux move with Novell is perfect storm

    Microsoft Doesn’t Like Linux

  • 11.08.2006 Microsoft Doesn’t Like Linux The strongest threat toward Microsoft’s revenue is Linux.Any consumer who is running Linux on a desktop isn’t going to use Microsoft Office, can’t leverage the features of Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player
  • Beyond an Xbox, it’s unlikely that a Linux desktop user will pay for any Microsoft products or services.Any IT department that’s running Linux on servers isn’t going to use SQL Server, Exchange Server, Sharepoint Server or BizTalk Server, and is unlikely to want to use Microsoft’s nascent SaaS offerings.By contrast, a consumer that’s using Windows on the desktop is a potential revenue goldmine
  • But if they’re on Linux, Microsoft’s battle is much harder. One of Microsoft’s strongest weapons against Linux (and against Mac OS X and Solaris, which are growing threats on the desktop and server, respectively) has been software compatibility
  • And it seems as if it should always be Microsoft’s strategy to ensure that Linux solutions aren’t 100 percent interoperable with Windows. In that light, how should one interpret Microsoft’s deal with Novell regarding interoperability collaboration with Novell? (There was a separate agreement regarding patent licensing, which is a topic for another day.) Simply put, it means nothing good for the Linux community. The announcement says that the companies will work together on virtualization, Web services management and document format compatibility

Microsoft and Novell — A Good Thing

    Novell and Microsoft Collaborate III

  • Open Source > Linux > LQ

  • The combined offering will consist of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (‘SLES’) and a subscription for SLES support along with Microsoft Windows Server, Microsoft Virtual Server and Microsoft Viridian that will be offered to customers desiring to deploy Linux and Windows in a virtualized setting
  • Microsoft will spend $12 million annually for marketing Linux and Windows virtualization scenarios and will also spend $34 million over the term of the agreement for a Microsoft sales force devoted primarily to marketing the combined offering
  • Microsoft agreed that for three years it will not enter into an agreement with any other Linux distributor to encourage adoption of non-Novell Linux/Windows Server virtualization through a program substantially similar to the SLES subscription ‘certificate’ distribution program
  • As points out, that money may be coming just in the nick of time: This news comes just one day following rumors, still unconfirmed by Novell, that the Linux company had laid off some employees
  • It could be a way to incent Novell not to sue (which it looks like could have been a very real possibility on multiple fronts), it could be a play into a few new markets such as virtualization for Microsoft, it could be an attempt to subvert the Linux community or a variety of other things

    Novell and Microsoft, Part 3

  • Journeys in Linux at an Indiana ACCESS High School Wednesday, November 08, 2006 Novell and Microsoft, Part 3 I’m still confused as to the actual specifics
  • The distributors of other versions of Linux cannot assure their customers that Microsoft won’t sue for patent infringement
  • ‘If a customer says, ‘Look, do we have liability for the use of your patented work?’ Essentially, If you’re using non-SUSE Linux, then I’d say the answer is yes, ‘ Ballmer said
  • Does Linux infringe on Microsoft Intellectual Property Rights? Microsoft:
  • Novell, why don’t you voice your opinion on this HALF as loudly as your new partners??? Why are you allowing them to say it in such a way as to imply your belief of it? The only thing that’s clear to me is that Microsoft, no longer able to ignore Linux’s steady creep onto the Desktop, is now trying to figure out how to profit from it through Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt
  • By saying they won’t sue anyone using SuSE, they’re creating the mirage that they can sue you for using Linux, and that the only legaly safe Linux brand now is Novell
  • Does this matter to people who are already using Linux? Not really as far as I can tell, except it seems to be pushing people like us away from Novell and SuSE, overall

Linux-Watch: Novell Defends Microsoft Patent Agreement

Microsoft Starts to “Get” Open Source

  • Wednesday November 8, 2006 5:06PM by in Those who believe that Microsoft only pays lip service to Open Source may be surprised by the mega-deal Microsoft just signed with Novell, which shows that Microsoft has finally decided to come to terms with Linux
  • But the upshot is this: There should be better interoperability between Linux and Windows as a result of it
  • Microsoft will be paying $240 million to Novell for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server subscription certificates, for example, for Microsoft customers who want to use Linux in Windows environments
  • That will cover support and maintenance for Novell’s SuSE Linux Enterprise Server
  • So the days of a siege mentality at Microsoft when it comes to Linux and Open Source are clearly over
  • Linux is one of Microsoft’s biggest threats

Microsoft Linux! – Is it April Fools already?

  • Microsoft Linux! – Is it April Fools already? My phone and email have been going not stop for the past few hours regarding the latest announcement coming out of Redmond
  • And for those who have asked, as far as I can tell, Hell didn’t freeze over yet, but its true, and are partnering together to promote LINUX! My first reaction, was to look at the calendar to make sure it wasn’t a belated April fools joke or some ha ha, gotcha message at the bottom
  • If you look at other things that have taken place lately with stepping into the Linux realm and announcing they were going to start offering support for Linux, it starts to make more sense
  • In my travel’s throughout the United States for the past 5 years working in the Partner Channel, I’ve come to realize there is a love / hate relationship with in the Microsoft / Linux world or at least people seem to be putting off that vibe
  • When it comes down to it, Linux is good for business because competition promotes innovation, which everyone benefits from in the long run
  • What will be interesting to see is if there are any invisible lines drawn in the sand between the Linux guru’s of the world because Microsoft is now venturing further into their world

Why is Microsoft interested in linux?

  • Now, Microsoft has announced that they will also co-develop a version of linux with Novell (based on the SUSE distribution)
  • In a Recent Article from : ‘Microsoft will offer sales support for Suse Linux and will co-develop with Novell in the areas of virtualization, Web services management, and document format compatibility between Microsoft Office and Open Office
  • The collaboration will make it easier for users to run both Suse Linux and Microsoft Windows on their computers.’ At first glance, this sounds like a great thing
  • Linux works great in a server environment, but I have had many issues when attempting to use it as a desktop machine (driver support..or the lack of is one of the biggest problems)
  • One of the main objectives here is to get back the marketshare that is slowly being lost to linux servers
